Puglian Red and Puglian White are labels resulting from the purchase by drinks wholesaler Carlsberg-Tetley, of a container of wine from Puglia in the heel of Italy.
These were originally intended to be the wines of the month at 400 Allied Domeq outlets. But they have proved so successful that they have become a permanent feature on the company's list and are to be regular items in Ansells, Tetley, Ind Coope and Taylor Walker pubs.
These pub chains, like Carlsberg-Tetley, are part of the Allied Domeq group, but Carlsberg-Tetley also sells its products to the on-trade outside the group.
The wines are made with the help of the Australian wine-maker Kym Milne who sampled indigenous and French grape varieties, before selecting the grapes for the venture. The object was to combine the best of local tradition with New World style.
The red is described as "medium bodied with vibrant colour and a soft, complex palate of ripe cherry fruit flavours and spicy overtones", the white as "complex and full-flavoured".
Carlsberg-Tetley (01283 545320) lists Puglian Red and White at £35.04.
