Richard Hughes Cookery School been named the Cookery School of the Year

The Richard Hughes Cookery School in Brundall near Norwich has been named the Cookery School of the Year at the inaugural British Cookery School Awards. 

Owner and chef tutor Richard Hughes’ school beat entries from across the country to win the overall title at the awards. He also took home the prize for Best Small Cookery School.

Nigel Barden, head judge of the British Cookery School Awards, said: “Richard Hughes has done brilliantly to win these two awards as he was up against some of the most famous cookery schools in the UK.  We were looking for cookery schools that could demonstrate dynamism and a commitment to exceeding customer expectations, as well showing entrepreneurial characteristics, business nous and sublime cookery teaching skills.” 

Meanwhile the Ashburton Cookery School in Devon also won two awards: Large Cookery School of the Year and Best English Cookery School.

The Best Scottish Cookery School award went to Edinburgh New Town Cookery School, while the Chef’s Room Fish and Cookery School was named best in Wales and the Belle Isle Cookery School won best school in Northern Ireland.

With more than 250 cookery schools now operating in the UK, the British Cookery School Awards were set up this year to recognise schools that deliver a first class experience. The awards aim to celebrate the important role that cookery schools play in driving Britain’s passion for cooking. The judging panel included BBC presenter Barden, former Michelin-starred chef Martin Blunos, and Martin Johns, development chef at Kenwood.

Best Small Cookery School: Richard Hughes, Cookery School       
Best Specialist Cookery School: The Cookery School at Isle of Wight College
Best Use of Local Ingredients: Newlyns Cookery School  
Best Community Engagement: Cookies Cooking
Best Tutor: John Webber, Nick Nairn Cookery School                     
Best Young Rising Star: Gloria Ford, Divertimenti
Unsung Hero: David Viey, L’atelier des Chefs                     
People’s Choice: Britain’s Favourite Cookery School: Orchards Cookery
Cookery School the Year: Richards Hughes Cookery School
