Le Gavroche named best restaurant in Europe by TripAdvisor

Le Gavroche has been named the top restaurant in Europe by review website TripAdvisor.

Michel Roux Jnr's two-Michelin-starred restaurant in London's Mayfair has topped the poll of TripAdvisor's inaugural Travellers' Choice Restaurant Awards in Europe and has also ranked fifth in the world.

Michel Roux Jnr (pictured) told Caterer and Hotelkeeper he was delighted with the award. "It's always nice to get recognition and as this has come from the dining public it's even more special," he said.

"TripAdvisor has been getting a lot of slack recently and I have had a few nasty reviews on there myself. But you have to take the rough with the smooth and I think the public is intelligent enough to make up their own mind when reading these reviews."

Meanwhile Nigel Platts-Martin's Michelin-starred Chez Bruce in Wandsworth, London and La Trompette in Chiswick, London made it into the top 10 European restaurants, landing in seventh and tenth place respectively, with Sam and Eddie Hart's Barrafina in ninth position.

"As the UK's capital city, London is visited by millions of tourists every year, but in the past it has sometimes been derided for its culinary offerings," said Emma Shaw, spokeswoman for TripAdvisor.

"But now millions of TripAdvisor users have spoken, proving that London's restaurants are not only world class, but enjoyed by those that really matter - diners."

The top 10 restaurants in London also include the Ledbury, Hawksmoor Seven Dials, Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester, Goodman, Moro and Pétrus.

The best restaurant in the world, according to TripAdvisor, is Le Bernadin in New York.
