Niels Sherry replaces Anna-Marie Dowling at the Royal Horseguards

Niels Sherry has been appointed general manager of the five-star, 280-bedroom Royal Horseguards hotel, replacing Anna-Marie Dowling, who has left the property for "personal reasons".

As well as taking over the running of what is Guoman Hotels' flagship property, Sherry will also run the adjacent meetings venue, One Whitehall Place.

The appointment marks Sherry's return to hotels after four years out of the sector as managing director of luxury fine wine advisory company, Sarment. Prior to that he was chief operating office of De Vere Deluxe - a now-defunct luxury brand within the De Vere Group - a position he left abruptly after just four months.

His previous hotel experience spans 20 years and includes stints at the Sheraton Park Tower, the Sanderson and St Martin's Lane hotels. He joined De Vere Deluxe after leaving New York, where he was vice-president of the Morgans Hotel Group.

Sherry said he was hoping to put his experience and knowledge to the test during what was "an exciting but equally challenging year" for London hotels.

"The Royal Horseguards and One Whitehall Place is a stunning property with incredible character and a rich historical background and I am looking forward to embracing the new challenges that this role will bring," he added.

Guoman Hotels is one of two brands - alongside Thistle Hotels - operated by Guoman Hotel Management. As well as the Royal Horseguards, it runs four hotels in London - Charing Cross, the Cumberland, the Tower and the Grosvenor hotel in Victoria.
