Cliveden tops the price tag on Von Essen hotels

At £35m, Cliveden, the five-star, 41-bedroom hotel catapulted into history by the Profumo scandal, is the trophy asset among the Von Essen portfolio of properties currently being marketed for sale.

The administration of Von Essen in April has released 27 hotels - 26 in the UK and one in Bagnols, France - on to the market with a total price tag of £203.25m.

Besides Cliveden, the other prized assets include the five-star, 45-bedroom Royal Crescent in Bath at £22.5m, the four-star, 19-bedroom Amberley Castle, Arundel, West Sussex, at £13.5m, and the five-star, 20-bedroom Seaham Hall, County Durham, at £12.5m.

At the other end of the scale, the 14-bedroom Lewtrenchard Manor, Lewdown, Devon, would appear to be a relative bargain at £750,000, but it is understood to be in need of refurbishment.

Also up for grabs is Thorn Island, off the coast of Pembrokeshire, where Andrew Davis, founder of Von Essen, had hoped to redevelop a castle as a hotel. Its price is £750,000.
