Travelodge is hosting the UK's first Sleep Concert, where musicians will play special commissioned snooze-inducing melodies.
The event has been developed in response to findings from the company's annual Sleep & Professions study which reveals that 75% of Britain's workforce is getting less than the recommended eight hours of sleep per night.
"Sleep concerts have been a great success in Japan where stressed-out workers will pay £50 for the privilege of nodding off to a live music performance," said Leigh McCarron, Travelodge sleep director. "This idea has inspired us to create our own UK version giving exhausted workers the opportunity to relax, take a nap and feel revitalised, resulting in improved physical, mental and emotional health."
Travelodge has consulted a range of professions across the UK to establish the repertoire for the performance. As a result, a diverse range of sleep-enhancing music - which will include works by Mozart, Back, Michael Buble and Snow Patrol - is being devised by quartet String Mania.
The inaugural, free Sleep Concert will be held on 20 July at 12.30pm at London City Road Travelodge, where all those attending will be supplied with pillows, duvets and eye masks. To register for a place, email sleepconcert@travelodge.co.uk
Conducted in May 2010, the Travelodge Sleep & Professions Study was conducted amongst 6,000 workers. The top three causes of sleep deprivation are worries over job security (36%), performance at work (27%) and financial concerns (12%), while civil servants, bankers, factory workers, doctors and teachers are said to be the workers hardest hit by lack of sleep.
