The historic hotel, which was set up in 1837 and bought by Rocco Forte Hotels last year for £51.5m, was closed this April, prior to being given a £15m makeover.

When Johnson joined Cond‚ Nast Johansens in September 2000 to head up its Great Britain and Ireland hotel guides, he had already spent several years in hotel management, notably at the Savoy and Cliveden.

Johnson described his move back into hotel managements as "too good an opportunity to miss".
