Callow Hall is latest Von Essen hotel to be sold

Callow Hall in Mappleton, Derbyshire has become the 17th hotel from the Von Essen Hotels portfolio, to be sold off a guide price of £2.25m after the company collapsed into administration earlier this year.

Situated at the gateway to the Peak District National Park, Callow Hall is a 16-bedroom, Grade II-listed country house hotel, dating back to the mid-19th century. It is set within 33 acres and contains many Jacobean architectural features.

The hotel was sold by Christie & Co to a private buyer with funding arranged by sister company Christie Finance.

Jeremy Jones, director of corporate hotels at Christie & Co, said: "Callow Hall is a splendid hotel offering a host of exquisite features for both visitors to the area and to corporate clients alike."

Twenty-six hotels in the UK and one in France were put up for sale after Von Essen - which had debts of nearly £300m - was taken over by administrators Ernst & Young in April. Alongside the sale of 17 hotels so far, Thorn Island Fort off the coast of Pembrokeshire, has also been sold.

The Von Essen hotels still to be sold include Cliveden, the Royal Crescent, Sharrow Bay, Ston Easton Park, Congham Hall, Dalhousie Castle, Lewtrenchard Manor, Seaham Hall and Chateau de Bagnols in France.

Among the four hotels which did not form part of the original administration of Von Essen, Hunstrete House closed after being put into voluntary liquidation, Hotel Verta has recently by sold to a company headed by Simon Cowell's brother Nicholas, and Llangoed Hall is on the market, with the Forbury being the only hotel that continues to be owned by Von Essen's founder Andrew Davis.
