Search goes on for Hilton arsonist

Thursday 29th January 1998 00:00

Essex police are still looking for an arsonist who struck at the 240-bedroom Hilton National hotel at Stansted Airport earlier this month.

"The fire is suspicious and it's still being investigated," said DC Christopher Heaffey, one of the officers involved in the hunt.

The police are keeping an open mind about whether the person who started the three small fires was a hotel employee or not. They started within a staff-only area, but Heaffey said that a non-employee could easily have gained access.

He also praised hotel staff who acted quickly to tackle the blaze and raise the alarm: "If they hadn't, the consequences could have been disastrous."

Anyone with information should contact DC Heaffey on 01279 680298.
