The Royal Commission on the Licensing Laws is again in session, and has already elicited some very curious information on the question of occasional licences. In Cardiganshire, according to Mr Willis Bund, the chairman of the Quarter Sessions, these licences are very elastic in their nature. For instance, on the occasion of a fair in a small village, containing only eleven houses, every building obtained a licence, except the Board school and the chapel.

50 years ago

Ten supplementary clothing coupons are to be issued to chefs, cooks and other whole time workers in the kitchens of catering establishments for the current rationing period, the Board of Trade announced this week.

This extra ration, usually known as "The Industrial Ten", is similar to that given in the 1945/46 ration period, and the categories of workers eligible are substantially the same.

The issue will be made on and after 2 December, through local offices of the Ministry of Labour to employers for distribution to their workers.

Housekeepers have a duty to promote a better image of their job to young people coming into the industry, said Arlene Bake, executive housekeeper of the Heathrow Post House, at London Airport.

"Don't sit upstairs and think of yourselves as bedroom cleaners," she said. "Approach the public, go out to schools and Job Centres."

Housekeeping was not usually seen as the way to the top, but for many people in the industry, the role of executive housekeeper was the top, she said.
