Roadside big mac
McDonald's has opened an 86-seat roadside restaurant at the new Poplar 2000 service station near Lymm, Cheshire, at the junction of the M6 and M56 motorways.
The site is being developed as a joint venture between Poplar 2000's managing director, Brian Lever, and construction company Pochin. Phase one, which opened this summer, included a 300-seatself-service restaurant.
Cornish hotel link
The 121-bedroom Falmouth Beach Hotel in Cornwall has added 25 bedrooms by acquiring the adjacent Croft Hotel and leisure complex.
The Croft was bought by the Glenrock Group, owner of the Falmouth, for an undisclosed price. The hotels will be linked by Christmas, following £25,000 of building work.
Birmingham's Midland Hotel will reopen as the Burlington Royal in August 1996, following completion of a £17m refurbishment. The 111-bedroom hotel closes on 24 December, with the loss of 120 jobs.

Mandarin Oriental is to take over management of the 369-bedroom Kahala Hilton in Honolulu, Hawaii, when Hilton's operating contract ends in January.
The deal with current owner Kahala Royal means Mandarin will also take a one-third equity stake in the property.
