Turpin set to boost growth at Quadrant

FORMER Compass Services managing director Dick Turpin has been made a non-executive director of Quadrant, to assist the Post Office caterer as it pushes ahead with expansion plans.

Quadrant managing director John Burchell told Caterer Mr Turpin had been recruited for his breadth of knowledge of the hospitality industry.

"You can never know too much about the industry and the people who operate in it," he said.

Quadrant, which caters at 90% of Post Office sites, is actively pursuing work outside the Post Office, but remains restricted to public sector and telecommunications contracts.

"But that still leaves an enormous amount of business to compete for," Mr Burchell added. "We're looking at anything that's available in the public sector, and are putting in bids for a high percentage of contracts."

Quadrant started winning outside contracts in early 1992, and now has a total of 22. In March it added five contracts in Northern Ireland to the eight it already held in the province.

Turnover for 1993-94 hit the projected figure of £65m, while profit margins were slightly better than expected at just under 3%.

Mr Turpin brings to the post experience gained as managing director of such companies as Berni Inns, event caterer Letheby & Christopher and Compass Services before its buyout from Grand Metropolitan.

He is the second non-executive director to join the board of Quadrant, which three years ago appointed Jeremy Scroxton, an associate of Greene Belfield-Smith, the hospitality division of management consultancy Touche Ross.

Mr Burchell quashed any suggestion that the appointment of a second non-executive director was a move nearer the management buyout rumoured for some time, saying nothing could happen until the Post Office was privatised.

"A buyout remains just a rumour. There will not be any change in the status of Quadrant until the status of the Post Office changes, and that could be years," he said.
