Get ready for the fair

HOW is it that year after year the Grand Hall at Olympia can be filled by exhibitors at the London Wine Trade Fair? And be packed with wine buyers? Could there be enough to maintain interest?

The answer is simple. Wine is a living thing in more senses than one. It changes in the bottle. But it also changes as a product from cuvée to cuvée, from vintage to vintage, and as new wines made in new and different ways, it changes in response to new technology, from country to country and from fashion to fashion.

The wide choice of wines available in the UK can mean hard work, but it is at the same time a special advantage for people who want to broaden their knowledge and experience. At the London Wine Fair (Olympia, 17-19 May), among the hundreds of wines on show look out for:

lThe collection of Australian wines presented by their agents on the Australian Wine Bureau (stands 116 & 149). There will be varietal tastings by region.

lA vertical tasting of Riesling Schlossberg Alsace wines from Domaine Paul Blanck et ses Fils on the stand of Julian Baker Fine Wines (stand 88) on the second day of the fair, Wednesday 18 May.

lEfficiently organised information to back up the German wines which, all agree, need more exposure, on German Wine Information Service (stand 392).

lSome worthwhile, but little known wines from the Swiss Wine Growers Association (stand 362).
