Electrical rules

HOTELIERS do not have to call in electricians to satisfy electrical appliance testing rules, according to a leaflet launched this week by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE).

The leaflet has been issued specifically to deal with requirements in hotels, following a spate of false claims made by some electricians last year.

The leaflet, Maintaining portable electrical equipment in hotels and tourist accommodation, is available from the HSE on 0787 881165 (single copies are free). A video showing what to look out for costs £5 (tel: 0937 541010).

AWT promotion

THE Sunday Times is teaming up with London restaurateur Antony Worrall Thompson to launch a promotion aimed at drumming up business for restaurants, retailers and travel agents.

The Alpha promotion, due to be launched in March, will take the form of a readers' club.

Participating restaurants will give members a 10% discount, and will be asked to take part in short-term promotions such as free children's food or two-course lunches for a fiver.

Lancaster refit

LONDON's 418-bedroom Royal Lancaster Hotel is to undergo a £5.7m refurbishment under new owner, the Lancaster Landmark Hotel Company.

The Thai-owned group took possession of the property earlier this week after completion of a £64m deal with the Rank Organisation.
