Michelin-starred chef Robert Thompson, chef proprietor of the Hambrough on the Isle of Wight, has been named an ambassador for the island by a new tourism body.

Visit Isle of Wight, which was launched this week, has appointed the chef along with Radio One DJ and Bestival organiser Rob Da Bank, and clothing brand Rapanui founder Rob Drake-Knight as its official ambassador.

The body aims to attract an extra 300,000 visitors to the Isle of Wight each year, with its ambassadors helping to showcase the best the island has to offer. The ambassador role will see Thompson promote the island both across the UK and internationally.

Visit Isle of Wight chief executive David Thornton said: "We will announce a list of immediate actions to ensure that the Isle of Wight stands out as a must-see place to visit in 2013 and beyond."

Thompson added: "I am honoured to be an ambassador for the Isle of Wight. I love the Island we have fantastic produce, amazing surroundings and so much to offer. I know I can really play a part in making the Island a serious food destination."
