Brighton's Gingerman restaurant group buys fourth venue

Brighton-based restaurateurs and gastropub owners Ben and Pamela Mckellar have acquired a fourth venue, to be named the Ginger Dog.

The new venture saw the Mckellars buy the freehold of the former Wellington pub in Kemptown, Brighton, from Punch Taverns for around £400,000.

“It was very much a local’s pub and what we are planning to do is make it into a local neighbourhood pub but with a strong slant on food. That’s what we have done with our other sites,” Gingerman Restaurants' owner Ben Mckellar told Caterer.

The Ginger Dog, which is expected to do around 500 covers a week, will offer around 50 seats, plus a private dining room with a further 20 seats.

The Mckellars already run the Gingerman restaurant at Norfolk Square in Brighton, the Ginger Pig pub in Brighton and the Ginger Fox pub in Albourne, West Sussex.

Ben McKellar indicated that the company wanted to expand “steadily” in the future, taking on a new business every couple of years.
