UK's richest hoteliers and restaurateurs revealed

Sir Terry Matthews, owner of the Celtic Manor resort in Gwent, Wales, has regained pole position as the wealthiest of Britain’s hoteliers and restaurateurs, in this year’s Sunday Times Rich List.

Sir Terry is now estimated to be worth £1.1b - even if the majority of his wealth comes from telecommunications rather than hotels.

He lost the top spot last year to hospitality financier Urs Schwarzenbach, owner of the Dolder Grand hotel in Zurich.

This year Matthews is placed 29th in the overall list, while Schwarzenbach is at 35th and is valued at £847m.

Irish entrepreneur Sean Quinn, owner of the Hilton in Prague, makes it into the list at number 39, just ahead of Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay, who have an interest in London's Ritz hotel and are in 42nd place.

Trevor Hemmings of Leisure Parcs is 46th on the list, and worth £700m, ahead of Mohammed al-Fayed, at 81, and Sir Rocco Forte, at 117th, on £385m.

Former PizzaExpress boss Luke Johnson makes it in for the first time, at 508th and worth £78m, and Philip Kaye of restaurant group Ask Central, at 621, is estimated to be worth £65m.
